Hollywood Bowl Customers Reviews
Still a Solid Live Performer
I saw John Mellencamp in Memphis the other day and he is still really good live. I liked the fact that he played a couple of new songs along with the classic stuff and the new material sounded good and I was happy he wasn't afraid to do a song about common sense gun control. His backing band is amazing and he showed good energy during the show.
I did, however, take off one star because some of his vocals were hard to hear unless you sat right up front. His vocals need to be up in the mix. Plus Mellencamp who has never used a corporate sponsor for his tours went with TCM this year. I am okay with that but they spent literallly the first 30 minutes of the show showing old film clips. It allegedly was tied in with Mellencamp's view of music and his career but it just didn't work. Many fans were complaining even booing and were restless and people paid no attention to the film clips so even if anyone was interested they wouldn't be able to hear a thing. Word of advice, he is going to turn off fans if he continues to do that. He either needs to go straight into performing, that's what we paid money for or he needs to go with an opening band for the first 30 minutes or so. It doesn't even have to be a famous band, pick a local band to open each show.
